It’s finally in sight: the dream job that could change everything. Now comes the most important step: the interview. But how do you master the interview without letting nerves get the better of you? HR expert and recruiter Regina Franta gives you valuable tips on how to prepare for the interview and present yourself confidently and authentically.

1. Preparation is everything

Learn about your future employer and the job. Thorough preparation is the key to success. You should know all the details about the position and the company. You should also understand the expectations of the position so that you are not only confident, but also genuinely interested in the job.

Regina says: “Before you go to the interview, think carefully about why you want the job and what you need to know about the company. Research the responsibilities, requirements, and context of the role. This preparation will show that you are serious.”

2. AI can help - but don't turn your head

Writing applications and resumes with AI in just a few seconds – how nice is that? But the interview is the moment of truth: AI cannot replace an authentic personality in an interview. You have to be convincing in person and show that you really understand the position and the questions in the interview.

Regina says: “AI can help you prepare, but you have to have the conversation at eye level. It’s no good if you use AI and then can’t act competently in the interview”.

3. First impressions count

Don’t put pressure on yourself by overdressing.  Your appearance should be appropriate for the professional context and present you professionally but authentically. You should be the focus of the interview, not your jewelry, makeup, or clothing. Minimalist and neat clothing is ideal as it supports your personality without being too distracting.

Regina says: “Dress in a way that makes you feel comfortable, but also looks appropriate for the position. Clothing that doesn’t distract and makes you feel good will help you focus on the interview.”

4. Maintain ease and authenticity

We always think that others are relaxed in interviews. No, almost no one is relaxed – candidates are tense in interviews, all the way to the boardroom. This is normal, but it is important to control this nervousness and remain authentic.

Regina says: “There are simple techniques that can help you appear more relaxed, even if you’re upset inside. Press your feet firmly to the floor or clasp your hands together – this reduces stress. Or take a moment to sip water. A calm demeanor shows your counterpart that you are confident and authentic.”

5. Show humor and confidence

Interviews are serious business, but a humorous start can break the ice and help your interviewer connect with you. Being quick-witted and able to respond to difficult questions with humor will make you memorable.

Regina says: “Sometimes a charming, confident answer is exactly what you need to position yourself in a conservative environment. But you have to be able to continue on that level.”

Conclusion: appear authentic and confident

With thorough preparation, an authentic appearance and the ability to present yourself confidently, you will increase your chances of landing your dream job. Be brave, ask the questions that are important to you and relax – then nothing will stand in the way of your interview success.
