Women in business: Closing the leadership gap in European economy
Women are still underrepresented in the European economy. In 2023, an average of 35.2% of managers in the EU were female, with Germany below the EU average at around 29%.
A study by the European Investment Bank shows that in 47% of companies managed by women, the proportion of female employees is over 50%, while in 74% of companies managed by men this proportion is below 50%.
Women have a considerable influence on consumer decisions. However, they are still underrepresented in leadership positions and decision-making processes, which points to existing gender inequalities in the European economy.
This is where Cathy Lieberei comes in with her platform: Getting more companies into the hands of female decision-makers.
The mission: Advancing gender equality in business
Cathy is committed to promoting gender equality and supporting women-owned businesses, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal No. 5. She believes in fostering diversity and tolerance, creating an inclusive platform that values women’s unique perspectives and contributions. Through InFrauenhand, she works toward a more equitable and inclusive business world.
From global consultant to advocate for women
Cathy is a mother of two children and lives in Essen. She worked for almost 13 years as a consultant in international development cooperation for a German consulting company and lived in countries such as Madagascar, Tunisia and Morocco. When her children were born, she returned to Germany and headed the Business Development and Marketing department in the same company. Her experiences made her aware of the economic disadvantage of women in Germany, which motivated her to found IN FRAUENHAND. With her platform, she wants to make companies owned by women more visible and encourage consumers to make targeted purchases from them in order to promote a more gender-equitable economy.
